To reduce the time customers queue to checkout Tesco is trialing new slimline selfservice checkouts to cut the waiting time by quarter for its shoppers at three London store locations; St.Paul’s Express, and its Metro stores in Tooley Street and Canary Wharf.

  • It expects to reduce 15 seconds off the average time taken at the checkouts.
  • The retailer has reduced in-store space dedicated to checkout counters and plans to expand it to about 150 stores if the trial is successful.
  • The retailer rolled out its latest checkout system after its successful roll out of contactless payment at all London stores where 24% transactions are contactless.
