South African grocer Pick n Pay has become the first in the market to offer shoppers a packaging-free assortment after it debuted a ‘No Packaging Zone’ at a Cape Town store. The scheme covers 88 products from dried pulses and cereals to oil and vinegar dispensed via hoppers. Shoppers are encouraged to use their own containers, although Pick n Pay provides reusable containers for those that do not. The trial is being operated to identify the most popular 20-30 products within the imitative before the program is rolled out to other South African outlets.
