Lidl Denmark director Dirk Fust has told Danish media outlet Fødevarewatch that the discounter plans 103 new stores across the country in coming years. Fust said 10-15 stores would be opened annually on the back of a DKK1 billion investment in the country.
The main area of focus will be Aarhus and Copenhagen. “We only have five stores in Aarhus and 20 in Copenhagen,” said Fust, “I believe there is room for 60-80 Lidl stores in the capital region.”
With chains like Netto and Fakta already prominent in the discount space, Lidl will need to scale fast to compete, but may be advantaged by potential rivals like Aldi Nord dropping away.
